A tankless water heater is more than just a source of hot water; it is meant to be reliable. But when the unit starts making odd noises, leaking, running at inconsistent temperatures, or failing to meet demand, the issue could be with the appliance itself, the gas or electric supply, the water flow, or some other element of the system. In such cases, an accurate diagnosis is essential for any homeowner that lives here.
Ferguson Plumbing Design offers professional repair, installation and maintenance for tankless water heaters in the area as part of our full range of plumbing and heating services. Our approach is to put our plumbers on the job to find the root of the matter and do it correctly from the outset.

What a Tankless Water Heater Visit Covers
When your traditional water heater takes up valuable space, struggles to keep up with demand, or drives up energy use, a tankless water heater can provide an efficient alternative. At Ferguson Plumbing Design Inc., our tankless water heater installation and replacement services deliver dependable hot water while helping improve efficiency and maximize available space.
Whether you’re looking to upgrade an outdated water heater, improve energy efficiency, or enjoy a continuous supply of hot water, our experienced team can help determine the right system for your home or business. With professional installation and expert tankless water heater services, we help ensure your system performs efficiently and reliably for years to come.
While a tankless heater provides water on demand, it still needs upkeep. Over time, you may see scale build-up, restricted flow, ignition trouble or leaks. If the water temperature fluctuates or the unit shuts down on its own, a professional can pinpoint the cause.
Our technicians will inspect your water heater and the surrounding pipe connections and water supply to tell you if a fix is the way to go or if replacement is in order. And when an old unit has run its course, we can handle installing a new one. We look at all the variables – venting, pipe sizing, household demand and space – to ensure the job is done right.
We serve both residential and commercial clients. Rather than opting for the least expensive piece of equipment, we will talk you through installation options that offer true efficiency and reliability.
There is something about the quiet New England feel of this place, from the open spaces and the Nashua River to the Pepperell Covered Bridge, a landmark from 1740. The town is home to many historic properties; nearly half the pre-1945 homes are in the Massachusetts Cultural Resource Information System, and the Historic District has buildings from the 1700s and 1800s.
The older buildings often means aging pipes and decades of modifications to the plumbing. Add to that the local geology, with its glacial till and outwash deposits, and the fact that municipal water and private well aquifers are in play, and you have a variety of conditions to contend with. Then there is the weather. With January days around 34°F and nights of 15°F, protecting the water supply and pipes from the cold is no small matter.
We do not put a blanket guarantee on a job simply to get the contract. We prefer to earn satisfaction by providing quality workmanship and sound advice. If your tankless water heater is proving unreliable or you have a leak, call on our experienced plumbers in Pepperell to put it right.
Hot water is gone before the household is done showering.
You’d rather choose its replacement than have it choose the date.
A tank eats a closet or a corner of the basement.
Error codes, lukewarm water, or cutting out mid-shower.
On Nashoba Valley well water, that’s a problem with a countdown on it.
And the mechanical room is getting smaller.
A tankless unit draws several times the gas of the tank it replaces. Most existing half-inch lines can’t feed one. Undersized gas is the most common defect we find in other companies’ installs: the unit starves at full fire, throws codes, and dies young.
Condensing units vent in PVC with specific slope, length, and termination rules. Get it wrong and you get condensate pooling, corrosion, and nuisance shutdowns.
Condensing tankless units produce acidic condensate that must be neutralized and drained properly. Skipping the neutralizer quietly eats whatever the drain line touches.
On well water, a scale filter or softener ahead of the unit isn’t an upsell. It’s what makes the 20-year lifespan real.
Flow rate and Massachusetts groundwater temperature decide the unit, not the brochure. Incoming water here runs cold. A unit sized for a Georgia spec sheet will disappoint in a Pepperell February.
$49 dispatch fee to come out. If we can see the problem, there’s no diagnostic fee on top. If we have to break out tools to diagnose, it’s $99. For installations, the quote is the whole number. Unit, gas line work, venting, condensate, permits. No surprises at the door, no surprises on the invoice.
It depends on your gas line, your venting path, and the unit your household needs, which is why we quote after a site visit, not over the phone. What we promise: the quote is the complete installed number, and the $49 dispatch visit that produces it doubles as the site assessment. Beware of any tankless price quoted without someone looking at your gas meter.
Endless, yes: unlimited flow, no. A properly sized unit delivers hot water continuously for as long as you want it, but it has a maximum flow rate. Size it right and two showers plus a dishwasher run fine. Size it wrong and everything runs lukewarm. Sizing is a math problem involving your fixtures and Massachusetts groundwater temperature, and it’s the first thing we work out.
20+ years is realistic, roughly double a standard tank, but it’s conditional on two things: a correct installation (gas supply and venting especially) and periodic descaling, which matters a lot on the hard well water common around Pepperell and Groton. Skip the maintenance and hard water can take years off it.
Usually, yes. A straightforward changeout with adequate gas supply is a one-day job. If the gas line needs upsizing or the venting run is complicated (common in older New England houses), it can run longer. You’ll know the timeline when you get the quote, and the quote covers all of it.
Almost certainly not. Error codes on a tankless usually point to scale buildup, a dirty inlet filter, a flow-sensor issue, or a gas or venting problem, all serviceable. Bring us the code (a photo of the display works) when you call and we’ll often know what we’re walking into before we arrive.
Yes, with one condition: scale protection. Untreated hard water shortens a tankless unit’s life and is the top cause of the problems we service. A scale filter or softener ahead of the unit, plus routine descaling, makes the 20-year lifespan real. We’ll test your water as part of the site visit and price the protection into the quote.
