Plumbing Service for Your Remodel

You need to have a firm grasp on what is already in place for a remodel to be a success. Our plumber will do a thorough inspection of everything – water heaters, drains, toilets, showers and the like – before any new installation.

In the case of a kitchen or bathroom, it is rarely as simple as swapping out a fixture. A new garbage disposal or sink may call for some changes to the underlying pipes and drains. We make sure to take care of such issues before the cabinets and walls are put back in place.

This is particularly true in Pepperell, where there are many an older home. Some date back to the 1840s and 50s, while others from the 1865 to 1900 era are so numerous that nearly half of the town’s pre-1945 homes are in the Massachusetts Cultural Resource Information System. These residences have seen their share of modifications over the years, making an inspection all the more worthwhile.

Installation of Gas, Heating and Plumbing

A renovation is also a good time to consider mechanical upgrades. We can handle relocating a boiler, putting in a tankless system, or working with your air conditioning setup.

It is worth noting that the Building Department in Pepperell mandates that licensed professionals perform any gas or pipe work and that the proper permits must be in order. An experienced contractor will see to it that the job is well organized and you are not in for any unpleasant surprises.

Then there are the local conditions to contend with. The town has its share of wetlands and river corridors along with some complex groundwater situations which can impact exterior and underground drainage. And while the public supply is drawn from wells, some properties have their own; in some parts of town, the aquifers are considered vulnerable to contamination.

We appreciate the historic New England feel and the open spaces around the Nashua and Nissitissit Rivers, not to mention the iconic Covered Bridge. But we also know the weather here. Winter freezes put a strain on exposed lines, and the seasons take their toll on hot water systems.
Our plumbers are ready to help with any aspect of your home’s repair or maintenance. We also cover Southern New Hampshire and other communities in Massachusetts, including Nashua. Give us a call to set up service and talk over your plans.

The craft argument

Rough-in is where a remodel is won or lost.

A rain head that’s an inch off center. A valve set for the wrong tile depth. A drain that doesn’t line up with a freestanding tub. These mistakes get made weeks before anyone can see them, and they’re brutal to fix after the marble goes up. We measure against the finish drawings, not the framing, and we rough in to the millimeter the design demands.

We know the fixtures. High-end plumbing fixtures are their own world: thermostatic valves, wall-mounted fittings, pot fillers, imported hardware with imported quirks. We spec, source and set them correctly the first time, and we’ll tell you honestly when a fixture on the mood board will fight the house it’s going into.

And we’ve been inside these houses since 2008. New England housing stock hides its surprises in the walls. Part of design work is knowing what the building will allow before the demo starts, and solving it on paper instead of mid-project.

The details you never see.
Straight runs, swept copper, labelled zones. The standard is the same whether it ends up behind marble or a basement wall.

How it works

How we work with designers, GCs and homeowners.

01

Drawings first

We review the plans (yours, your designer’s or your GC’s) and flag what the building will and won’t allow before anything is demoed.

02

Fixture specification

We help select and source fixtures that fit the design and the house, and confirm every rough-in dimension against the actual spec sheets.

03

Rough-in, coordinated

We set valves, drains and supplies to the finish drawings and coordinate with tile, millwork and electrical so no trade is waiting on another.

04

Finish and stand behind it

Fixtures set, everything tested, inspection signed off. And we’re twenty minutes away for as long as you own the room.

Designing the system

More than where the fixtures go.

A proper design maps the water supply, the drains, and the shower, sink and water heater connections, and it plans for access, so that future repairs do not mean opening finished work. On a remodel that begins with an honest picture of what is already in the walls: pipe that should be replaced while it is exposed, and whether a new kitchen will ask for capacity the existing supply cannot give.

Plan the equipment in, not around

Integrating a tankless unit or a new water heater is far easier decided at design stage than retrofitted afterward. The same goes for a boiler or gas appliance. Connections and service access are worth deciding on paper.

The water here shapes the design

The public supply draws from five gravel-packed groundwater wells and many homes are on private ones, and the town has noted that some aquifers lack natural barriers such as clay. Wetlands and river corridors complicate underground work. All of that belongs in the plan rather than in a surprise.

Pricing transparency

A note on budget.

Work at this level is quoted per project, after we’ve seen the drawings and the house: a real number for the actual scope, not a guess over the phone. If you’re at the earlier stage where a service call answers the question, the usual terms apply: $49 dispatch, $99 diagnostic only if we have to break out tools.

More of what we do
Questions we actually get

Straight answers, no runaround.

Do you do the whole remodel? No. We do the plumbing, and we do it completely: design input, fixture specification, rough-in, finish and inspection. We work alongside your GC and designer, or we can recommend people we trust. When should the plumber get involved in a remodel? Before demo. The most expensive words in a remodel are “we’ll figure that out later.” A drawing review costs you an hour early on; moving a drain after tile costs considerably more. Can you work from our designer’s drawings?Yes. That’s our preferred way to work. We build to the finish drawings and flag conflicts between the design and the building before they become field problems. Will you install fixtures we bought ourselves?Yes, with a spec review first. We check the rough-in requirements before demo, because an imported valve with metric connections is a problem you want discovered on paper. What does the plumbing on a high-end bath remodel cost? It’s quoted per project from the drawings and a site visit. Scope varies too much for a number over the phone to mean anything. What we promise is a real, itemized figure before work starts, and no surprises after. Can you match old plumbing in a historic house? That’s much of our work around here. Old New England homes take planning (supply routing, venting, what the structure allows) and that planning is exactly the “design” in Ferguson Plumbing Design.

Before the demo starts

Bring us the drawings. We’ll find the surprises on paper.

A drawing review early costs an hour. Moving a drain after the tile goes up costs considerably more. Start the conversation before anything gets opened.
